About US

Our  Mission

Our mission is to support and strengthen Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence in Africa.  We work towards the goal of Africans being not only observers and receivers of the ongoing advances in AI, but active shapers and owners of these technological advances.

Annual Indaba

The Deep Learning Indaba 2025

Indaba is a Zulu and Xhosa word referring to a gathering or conference to discuss important community matters. We are proud to announce that our annual gathering of the Africa AI community, the Deep Learning Indaba 2025, will be held in Kigali, Rwanda from 17-22 August.

This year we are partnering with the University of Rwanda, to host the event at their Kigali Campus.

The IndabaX Programme

The IndabaX is a way to experiment with the ways in which we can strengthen the Machine Learning community, and to allow more people to contribute to the conversation around AI across the continent. An IndabaX event is a locally-organised Indaba that helps spread knowledge and builds capacity in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence in individual countries across Africa.

Stories of Change Throughout the Years

“The Deep Learning Indaba is more than a conference — it’s a family. Attending the Indaba opened doors I never knew existed and connected me with brilliant people across Africa and the world. It gave me the confidence and community I needed to pursue my research and share my work. I’m so grateful to be part of this growing movement!”
Fatima A., PhD student, Nigeria

“Before the Indaba, I felt alone in my AI journey. Being part of this community showed me that Africa has brilliant minds tackling real challenges with machine learning. I made friends, found mentors, and even discovered research opportunities I couldn’t have imagined. The Indaba gave me a place to belong.”
Thabo M., MSc Student, South Africa

“Bringing my students to the Indaba has been transformative for our department. They return inspired, more confident, and better connected to a network of researchers and practitioners across Africa. The Indaba reminds us that building African AI is a collaborative effort — and that we are stronger together.”
Dr. Aisha K., Lecturer, Kenya
